Master of Arts in Education/TESOL (MA/TESOL)
The Master of Arts in Education/TESOL degree program offered by Glengarry University is designed to complement and expand upon TESOL, TEFLA and CELTA programs for teachers who wish to make a career of teaching English to non-native speakers. This degree program provides the student with advanced and up-to-date knowledge in ESL methodologies, techniques and teaching strategies, measurement, classroom activities, interactive CALL and WALL, course and curriculum design. It also covers critical thinking, teaching across the curriculum, educational leadership and administration.
Students should be aware that this program is NOT a teaching license. It is assumed that teachers have already qualified according to the licensing requirements of their state or province as required.
Prerequisites
A completed undergraduate degree from a recognized college or university is the preferred prerequisite. A degree in education or arts is appropriate but other disciplines will be considered. It is presumed that the applicant is currently a teacher or has had considerable, verifiable teaching experience in a normal school setting.
Non-native English speakers must be able to demonstrate an ability to read, comment on and write about advanced topics in the English language. No TOEFL or IELTS is required but this is a degree in teaching English so an advanced level of knowledge of English is expected.
Degree Requirements
The MA/TESOL degree program comprises three components totalling 40 credits:
1. A TESOL, TEFL or CELTA Certificate course - 6 credits
2. MA Courses and Thesis Project- 26 credits

Thesis Project
In lieu of the traditional, stress-producing thesis, Glengarry offers you an alternative - a Thesis Project. You will take the final papers you developed for each of your eight courses, add a final paper of similar length in which you will form them into a cohesive unit, summarize the knowledge you gained from the eight courses and describe how you are applying or will apply it to your endeavours.
This will be resubmitted in book format including a title page, abstract, table of contents, introduction, nine chapters (one for each of your papers including the final summary), bibleography and any appendices that were part of your original submissions.
3. A minimum of 600 hours Teaching Practicum - 8 credits
As noted above, we presume that the applicant is currently a teacher or has had considerable, verifiable teaching experience in a normal school classroom setting. A minimum of 600 teaching hours must be verified by head of the student's school before graduation can be completed. Full-time teachers should have no difficulty meeting this minimum. Five contact hours per day five days per week would translate into 600 teaching hours in six months. Verification would be in the form of a confirmation letter from the head of the school in which the teaching contact hours were performed. This should be on the school letterhead and bearing the school stamp across the signature.

Study Format
This is a research-based degree program. Not all courses have assigned texts. In many cases, the student will perform research on his/her own as part of the learning process. As this is a distance learning program, students will require considerable self-discipline and the ability to stick to the deadlines they set for themselves.
Students may take more than one course concurrently depending on their workload. If there is a recommended course text, the cost of this is not included in the tuition fee. Clicking on the respective course names above will take you to a descriptive page for each course.
Study guides, assignments and due dates will be posted on the website. Because we operate on an open format basis, assignment dates relate to when a student begins his or her studies rather than to a calendar date. Students and instructors are encouraged to communicate with their mentors by Yahoo / MSN Messenger or email.
Assessment
There are no formal examinations. Students will undertake assignments or case studies in the form of one or more written paper per subject. These will be available online and may be submitted by email. Mentors will give acknowledge receipt of assignments and feedback to students within a week of receiving it. The instructor/mentor will complete an assessment form to ensure that the student has attained a good grasp of the course materials and concepts and is able to coherently write about and apply them. Students receive a copy of the asessment form.
Tuition
Tuition for this graduate program is $5,600USD. We require an initial deposit of $1,200 USD payable upon acceptance for admission into the program. This may be paid by company check/cheque or by secure server through our website. Students in the USA or Canada may also pay by personal check/cheque. Students in other countries may pay by International Money Order or Direct Deposit.
Textbooks are not included in the tuition. Each course page has a description of the course and outlines recommended texts and/or other reading material.
