Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS)

Depending on your particular situation, you may also elect to take this degree as a:

Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (BAIS), or

Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (BSc/IS)

The only difference will be the weighting applied to different disciplines depending on your choice. Our degree in Interdisciplinary Studies is especially appropriate for mature learners and for completion of an undergraduate degree. It is a program that will bring together any academic courses and experiential learning you have already undertaken. It incorporates several disciplines, such as ecology, language and literature, psychology, and sociology into the overall degree study plan.

To complete your BIS, BAIS or BSc/IS degree, an interdisciplinary studies focus is very appropriate as a fundamental, well-rounded knowledge base and covers most of the subjects to which you would have been exposed in an undergraduate program.

Our Capstone Project will enable you to reflect on your studies from different interdisciplinary perspectives and tie them all together.

Overview of BIS Components and Recommendations:
You will need a total of 120 credits from Prior Learning, Business and Life Experience, and New Individual Learning to achieve your Bachelor's Degeree in Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS). The courses listed below should be viewed as guidelines rather than limitations. As with all of our degree programs, you have wide flexibility to select what you want to study as long as it makes reasonable sense for the direction you have chosen.

How to meet our requirements
Your advisor can assist you in developing a plan of completion for your Glengarry BIS degree. You may earn the credits you need in three ways:

i) Prior Learning Credits*  These are courses or programs you have previously taken with another institution. We would need copies of all certificates, diplomas, transcripts or letters of confirmation from the schools.

ii) Business and Life Experiences*  What you have done outside of academia may also be taken into account at the discretion of the university. This is university-level learning you have taken outside a normal educational setting and which is relative to your current selected program of study (BIS). Glengarry University, at its discretion, may assign a number of credits for these experiences.

iii) New Individualized Courses  After your Curriculum Vitae (résumé) has been reviewed and your credits for i) and ii) above have been verified, the remainder of credits would come from new individualized courses. Examples are in the table and list above.

You have great flexibility in selecting the materials you would like to study based on your personal or business interests.

Whether or not you have a plan in mind initially, you should discuss your ideas with your advisor. She or he will be able to provide valuable guidance. Once you have begun your studies, our flexibility continues. You may make changes within the framework of the degree outline. We do require that you discuss these with, and receive approval from, your advisor.

* Glengarry assessment of your prior learning, business and life achievements can help you to meet the liberal arts requirements–languages spoken/taught, professional development, career progression, etc. In all cases though, the onus is on you, the student, to demonstrate competency in the area where you wish these advanced standing credits.

How to get started:

3. Once we have reviewed this, we will contact you to advise you of the credits we have been able to assign to you, credits you need to complete your degree and to discuss your progem of study.
